Coolington Barn

Barn Conversion and Re-build of ‘hovels’ (open sided small barns) around the yard were granted permission. The hovels created space for more bedrooms and garaging/workshop.

Coolington Barn

A former agricultural barn set within rubble and ruins, it’s now a beautiful light-filled home with stunning views of the surrounding countryside. We worked with the owners to obtain planning permission for the barn conversion including the re-build of surrounding brick barns (the rubble). Turning them into a stunning kitchen and classic car workshops.

Project Details

The buildings hug a central south-facing courtyard. Perfect for a glass of something special! The glazed doors to the workshops mean that the owner can observe his cars (or his children as he likes to call them!) from within the living spaces.

Getting permission

It’s unusual to gain permission for any kind of new-build in designated open countryside. It took much determination and perseverance with the local authority to justify the importance of re-building the former ‘hovels’. This entailed much historical research and drawings to demonstrate how parked cars would look worse in this prominent position on the hillside, without lovely workshops to hide them in!

NB. Hovels are simple open sided barns used for housing livestock or as general farm storage.
