Barn conversion in a conservation area

A young couple came to us having walked past this barn for years. They appointed us to provide a consultation before they bought, checking they were making the right decision to buy the barn and that they turn it into their dream home.

We helped them to navigate the planning system. As the barn is in a conservation area, within a historical estate, a design in keeping was paramount. Yet as a young couple they wanted a high level of energy efficiency (a big part why they chose us) and contemporary living spaces inside. Meanwhile retaining the character of the barn they love.
A glazed, stepped hallway opening out onto the garden provides access to four bedrooms. All the existing openings were kept and triple-glazed with low e glass to mitigate overheating. Insulation combined with an ASHP keeps energy bills low. Fresh, heated air floods the interior from the MVHR system. The outer curve of the wall had existing buttresses for support and these were improved and strengthened. The beautiful original clay tiles were kept and relaid over an insulated warm roof.
